Skyworks Solutions Inc., has introduced a family of compact, RF front-end modules (FEMs). The company specifically designed the RF FEMs for LPWAN. The FEMs support LoRa®, SigFox, and other unlicensed band technologies and are suitable for
high-power Industrial, Scientific, Medical (ISM) applications operating in the 860 to 930 MHz frequency range.
Skyworks says that these new FEMs offer enhanced sensitivity and more than quadruple the operating range compared to a standalone system-on-chip (SoC). The company also says that the FEMs consume low power and occupy little board space, making them ideal for IoT and industrial platforms including sensors, beacons, smartwatches, thermostats, wireless cameras, medical pendants, and smoke and CO detectors.
The devices boast four-times the extended range and approximately 11 dB improved sensitivity compared to standalone SoC, covering both FCC and ETSI unlicensed bands. The supply voltage range for the FEMs ranges from 2.0 to 4.8 V, enabling direct operation from a battery. The low power consumption supports operation from coin cell batteries. The FEMs come in a compact 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.75 mm Multi-Chip Module (MCM) package. The FEMs are suitable for IoT and industrial applications.
