Veeco Instruments Inc. of Plainview, New York USA reported that Lumentum Holdings Inc. ordered the Veeco K475i™ Arsenide/Phosphide (As/P) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) System. Lumentum told Veeco that it plans to use the system to produce its semiconductor components for 3D sensing, high-speed fiber-optic communications, and laser-based materials processing. The Milpitas, California company makes optoelectronic and photonics products.

The K475i system uses proprietary TurboDisc® and Uniform FlowFlange™ MOCVD technologies. According to Veeco, these technologies let its customers improve dopant control and compositional uniformity while reducing the cost-per-wafer by up to 20 percent compared to alternative systems. Also, Veeco claims the system enables higher productivity while lowering operating expenses. Potential applications for the MOCVD system include lighting, solar, laser diodes, as well as fabricating vertical-cavity-surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), and pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors (pHEMTs).
