First Solar's 250MW Silver State South Solar Project Begins Construction

First Solar Inc. with Executives for NextEra Energy Resources, LLC joined state and local leaders at the ground breaking of the 250 MW Silver State South Solar project in Primm, Nevada. The project is strategically located on the California/Nevada border 40 miles south of Las Vegas, adjacent to an existing power plant and transmission line corridor.  NextEra Energy Resources subsidiary will own and operate the project that will deliver electricity to Southern California Edison under a long-term contract.

“Renewable energy sources such as solar power play an important role in the future energy mix in this country,” said Armando Pimentel, president and chief executive officer of NextEra Energy Resources. “We look forward to working with First Solar and Southern California Edison to make this project a reality.”

“Coming on the eve of the Clean Energy Summit, the timing of the Silver State South groundbreaking couldn’t be more perfect,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. “This project proves again that solar energy is the wave of the future. It stimulates economic growth, creates jobs, and replaces fossil-fueled energy with clean solar power.” Reid pointed out that the Silver State South Solar Project is expected provide 300 construction jobs and generating state and local tax revenue in addition to  benefiting local businesses.
