Emcore Corporation of Alhambra, California USA, reported that it is expanding production of DOCSIS 3.1, 1550 nm CATV transmitters utilizing the company’s Linear Externally Modulated Laser (L-EMLTM) technology. The CATV transmitter is for multiple-system operators (operators of multiple cable or direct broadcast satellite systems). Emcore says its L-EMLTM-based transmitters, which are now in volume production, have achieved qualification with major cable MSOs. The company plans to showcase the new MEDALLION 8100 L-EMLTM-based 1RU transmitter at the 2016 Cable-Tec Expo, September 27-29 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA.
The L-EMLTM device combines a low-noise, high-power, narrow linewidth laser with a proprietary highly-linearized modulator in a monolithic assembly. According to Emcore, the L-EMLTM technology enables long-distance optical link performance approaching traditional lithium niobate-based, externally modulated transmitters. However, Emcore contends that the L-EML system far exceeds the performance of Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser-based systems and is more cost-effective for its targeted applications.
“L-EML-based CATV transmitters usher in a new era of transmission technology for the industry and we are extremely pleased at the enthusiastic reception and successful qualification at major MSOs,” said Grant Olecko, Senior Product Line Director at Emcore. “With the rapid growth of next generation DOCSIS 3.1 deployments, Emcore developed a cost-effective solution that overcomes the technical limitations of linear DFBs, while pushing the boundaries of performance towards traditional, but higher cost, lithium niobate-based solutions,” added Olecko.
“The L-EML innovation is a truly disruptive technology in the industry which we unveiled at ANGACOM earlier this year, and we continue to ramp production to meet demand following additional successful trials,” commented Gyo Shinozaki, Vice President of Marketing for Emcore. “We are excited to showcase L-EML for the first time publicly in the U.S. at the 2016 Cable-Tec Expo.”
At the Cable-Tec Expo, Emcore will also showcase the company’s full system level portfolio for CATV and its full line of DOCSIS 3.1, DFB CATV butterfly, and TO-56 lasers, broadband photodiodes, low-noise optical receivers, and components for wireless and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) applications.
