Anadigics PAs with InGaP-Plus Technology Enable Samsung’s New Galaxy S4

May 20, 2013...Warren, New Jersey USA-based Anadigics, Inc. announced that the company’s AWL9581 802.11ac front-end IC (FEIC), AWT6651 ProEficient™ power amplifier (PA), AWT6624 HELP4™ PA, and AWC6323 HELP3E™ dual-band PA enable wireless connectivity in the Galaxy S 4 by Samsung Electronics. This feature-rich smartphone offers a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, 1.9 GHz quad-core processor, 13 megapixel camera, and Android® 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The new Samsung Galaxy S 4 also builds upon adds touch-less interactions and government-grade security.

Anadigics’ 802.11ac FEICs leverage the company’s exclusive InGaP-Plus™ technology and patented design architectures to combine a high performance power amplifier (PA), low-noise amplifier (LNA), and RF switch on a single die.

Anadigics’ AWL9581 5 GHz FEIC utilizes InGaP-Plus to deliver what the company claims to be the lowest current consumption, significantly extending battery-life in mobile applications.

The Company’s ProEficient, HELP4, and HELP3E power amplifiers also use InGaP-Plus and unique design architectures to provide greater efficiency in low power mode and extend talk-time. Additionally, Anadigics’ ProEficient PAs offer exceptional performance in high power mode to minimize current consumption when using 3G and 4G data services and maximize overall battery-life. Mellanox Agrees to Acquire Kotura

May 20, 2013...Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. of Sunnyvale, California USA, a supplier of interconnect solutions for servers and storage systems, has agreed to acquire Kotura, Inc., a developer of silicon photonics for high-speed networking applications. Mellanox and Kotura have signed a definitive agreement under which Mellanox will acquire the privately owned Kotura at a total cash purchase price of approximately $82 million subject to certain adjustments. The terms of the transaction have been unanimously approved by both the Mellanox and Kotura boards of directors.

Mellanox expects to establish its first R&D center in the United States at Kotura’s current location. Further, Mellanox intends to retain Kotura’s existing product lines to ensure continuity for customers and partners.

Kotura reportedly has over 120 granted or pending patents in CMOS photonics and packaging design, and successfully integrated multiple high speed active and passive optical functions onto a silicon chip. Mellanox says that the addition of Kotura’s technology will enable its interconnect products to reach 100Gb/s and beyond bandwidth, and have longer reach optical connectivity at a lower cost

Eyal Waldman, president, CEO and chairman of Mellanox Technologies stated, “We expect that the proposed acquisition of Kotura’s technology and the additional development team will better position us to produce 100Gb/s and faster interconnect solutions with higher-density optical connectivity at a lower cost. Skyworks New Family of Antenna Switches Supports Carrier Aggregation

May 13, 2013...Skyworks Solutions, Inc. of Woburn, Massachusetts USA has introduced RF switching technology that is enabling early adopters to implement carrier aggregation solutions. Carrier aggregation allows mobile service providers to use utilizing two or more bands simultaneously instead of the single band method used currently to combine spectrum and increase data rate throughput for an enriched data experience regardless of location. As an increasing amount of data is downloaded to smartphones, Skyworks says that mobile operators are driving carrier aggregation to help increase the efficiency and speed of today’s saturated mobile networks.

Skyworks’ devices support standardized inputs to popular industry chipsets (MIPI RFFE compatible) and address both transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) switching paths.

“Skyworks’ carrier aggregation switching solutions, which are compliant to tier-one, carrier-driven specifications, offer dedicated receive diversity functionality to accompany the primary antenna-switch path,” said David Stasey, vice president and general manager of analog solutions at Skyworks.

Avago Technologies to Acquire CyOptics

April 15, 2013...Avago Technologies of San Jose, California USA, a supplier of analog interface components for communications, announced the execution of a definitive agreement to acquire CyOptics Inc. CyOptics produces indium phosphide (InP) optical chip and component technologies for the data communications and telecommunications markets.

Aggregate compensation for acquisition of CyOptics, which had revenues of $210 million in 2012, will be about US$400 million in cash. Avago intends to fund the acquisition with cash on-hand. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions including receipt of U.S. regulatory approvals. The acquisition is expected to close during Avago’s fiscal third quarter of 2013.

According to Avago, the acquisition of CyOptics, which will add CyOptic's single-mode InP laser receiver and photonics integration technology, will strengthen Avago's fiber optics product portfolio for emerging 40G and 100G enterprise and data center applications. While Avago's optical transceiver products primarily leverage VCSEL-based technology, the acquisition of CyOptics is expected to facilitate Avago's establishment of a complementary optical components business to serve access, metro, and long-haul markets, as well as enterprise and data center segments. CyOptic’s customer base includes leading module and system OEMs.

"We believe CyOptics' leading InP technology and optical manufacturing capability will strengthen Avago's fiber optics portfolio and accelerate our ability to capture next generation 40G and 100G enterprise and data center sockets," stated Hock Tan, Avago president and CEO. "With CyOptics, we also see interesting revenue growth opportunities in delivering a broad range of proprietary components to the market."

OTEGLOBE Doubles International TransBalkan Network Capacity Employing the Infinera DTN-X Platform

April 8, 2013...Infinera of Sunnyvale, California, a provider of digital optical networks, reportedly helped complete the upgrade of OTEGLOBE’s international TransBalkan Network (TBN). OTEGLOBE, the leading international telecommunications provider in Greece and the Balkans, deployed 500 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) super channels with the Infinera DTN-X platform in OTEGLOBE's TransBalkan network which stretches more than 8,000 km from Greece to Germany. It is designed to offer multi-Terabits of capacity.

With this upgrade, OTEGLOBE virtually doubled the available capacity on this network from 600 Gb/s to more than 1 Terabit per second (Tb/s). The upgrade was reportedly needed to help meet the telecommunication needs of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Uniquely Infinera’s DTN-X solution, combines 500 Gb/s long haul super-channels with 5Tb/s of integrated OTN switching capacity and provides an intelligent, standardized GMPLS control plane for high-speed restoration. OTEGLOBE's network can reportedly support 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s services to its customers, international carriers, fixed and mobile operators, and multi-site organizations.

Dr. Panagiota Bosdogianni, OTEGLOBE's Technology Director, stated, "During the past 4 years we took advantage of Infinera's solution for its flexibility, reliability and ease of use, allowing us to activate new 10 Gb/s services in minutes. Being satisfied with our Infinera experience we selected the new DTN-X platform for our recent network upgrade, which has been successfully completed without disturbing existing traffic or our network operation procedures."

Mitsubishi Electric to Launch 40Gbps Driver-In EML-TOSA Compliant with Miniature Device Multi-Source Agreement

March 18, 2013...Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Tokyo, Japan announced today that it will begin shipping a compact 40Gbps Electro-absorption Modulator with Laser diode-Transmitter Optical Sub Assembly (EML-TOSA) for optical transmissions on June 1. As of March 1, the FU-695REA became the world's first EML-TOSA to comply with the 40Gbps Miniature Device Multi-Source Agreement (XLMD2-MSA) specification, which was made effective March 13. Mitsubishi Electric, LAPIS Semiconductor Co., Ltd., Oclaro, Inc., Renesas Electronics Corporation and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. signed the agreement. The device will be displayed at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition 2013 (OFC) in Anaheim, California from March 19-21.

Mitsubishi Electric will be the world's first optical device manufacturer to ship an XLMD2-MSA-compliant EML-TOSA for optical transmissions, thereby helping to downsize 40Gbps communication facilities and expand high-speed 40Gbps optical transmission networks. According to Mitsubishi Electric, the EML-TOSA is based upon common-specification device sizes and optical/electrical interfaces that allow manufacturers to standardize transceiver designs. The company says it allows less expensive electrical interconnection with flexible printed circuit board instead of coaxial connectors. It also enables optical transceivers that are 50% smaller than existing FU-697SEA model.

Package size of the device complies with common specifications for small CFP2/CFP4 optical-transceiver modules. The optical transceiver transmits up to 2km in the 1.55-micrometer band. It has an output power: 0 to 3dBm and measures 9.2mm x 18.1mm x 5.7mm (excluding receptacle).

Infinera's DTN-X Solution Deployed for the Delivery of 100Gb/s Services Across Mediterranean

March 11, 2013...Infinera, a provider of digital optical networks based in Sunnyvale, California USA, and Telecom Italia Sparkle Group, announced the MedNautilus’ deployment of the Infinera DTN-X platform across the Mediterranean to increase capacity up to 100Gb/s international connectivity services. MedNautilus, the Mediterranean operations of the Telecom Italia Sparkle Group, operates the largest protected submarine cable network in the Mediterranean connecting Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Cyprus, and serves the growing capacity needs of the region.

According to Infinera, the DTN-X can scale transport capacity without scaling operational complexity. Infinera says that the DTN-X solution offers coherent long haul reach for submarine links to seamlessly integrate terrestrial and subsea applications for network operators. Infinera says that the DTN-X is the first to deliver up to 500 Gb/s long-haul super-channels based on Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and the FlexCoherent™ Processor.

Mario Pirro, Sparkle’s EVP Technology, commented, “The market in the region is demanding faster and more advanced services and with the Infinera DTN-X solution for the provision of 100Gb/s services, we are able to provide the capacity we need in order to meet the fast growing requirements of our customers throughout the markets covered by our backbone.”

Cree and Eta Devices to Demonstrate the Most Efficient Power Amplifier for Mobile Base Stations

February 25, 2013...Cree, Inc. and Eta Devices, Inc. will demonstrate what the company's claim to be the world's most efficient power amplifier for mobile base stations at the 2013 Mobile World Congress, February 24-28 in Barcelona, Spain.

While current generation mobile base station amplifiers using silicon LDMOS transistors can provide amplifier efficiencies up to 45 percent, Eta Devices says its next-generation power amplifiers can deliver greater than 70% efficiency under a 4G LTE modulation format.

Jim Milligan, business director, Cree RF. "Our transistors have been instrumental in demonstrating Eta Devices' amplifiers, which perform 50 percent more efficiently than the best incumbent silicon power amplifiers currently available in the 4G LTE market."

It's estimated that the world's mobile networks consume about 120TWh of electricity per year, with 50-80 percent of these networks' power consumed by their power amplifiers and associated components. ETA claims that it could save up to 50 percent of the $36.5 billion spent to power mobile base stations each year.
