Crystal IS Announces New CEO
Source/Type: Press Releases - As issued by company

September 29, 2008... Green Island, New York USA -- Crystal IS, Inc., the world leading supplier of single crystal aluminum nitride substrates, has announced that it has hired Dr. Steven Berger as President and CEO.

Recently, Crystal IS, Inc., has utilized its aluminum nitride substrates for the development of deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes and, after demonstrating significant performance improvements from the use of these low dislocation substrates, has now reached a point where it is about to take these devices to market. Dr. Berger’s experience of bringing new products to market during his most recent role in FEI Company will greatly help Crystal IS make the transition to becoming a commercial supplier of deep UV LEDs.

During his 10 years at the electron microscope manufacturing company, FEI, Steven held several roles including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer. Here, he was part of the executive management team that grew the company from $150M to over $600M in revenue. Steven’s key role within FEI was to bring new products to market profitability.

Prior to joining FEI, Steven was a Technical Manager at AT&T’s Bell Labs. He also taught at Cambridge University, UK, after receiving his PhD from the Cavendish Laboratory. He holds a dozen US patents and is widely published in the fields of electron beam lithography, microscopy and analysis.

Crystal IS Inc is developing its deep UV LEDs at 265nm, the peak germicidal wavelength, targeting the water and air disinfection markets. LEDs will be available in 2009.
