TIR Systems Utilizes Lumileds' Luxeon LEDs To Light New 'Destiny' Product — First Solid-State RGB Colorwash Fixture with Conventional Light Output
Source/Type: Philips Lumileds Lighting - Press Releases - As issued by company

August 6, 2002... San Francisco, California
LEDs Permit Super-Slim Silhouette, Low Energy Consumption, Long Life

Lumileds Lighting announced today that its Luxeon LED light sources have enabled TIR Systems to develop the first solid-state RGB colorwash fixture with light output comparable to halogen and metal halide systems. The use of LEDs also gives the Destiny Colorwash Luminaire a far slimmer silhouette, lower energy consumption and longer life than conventional products, with the light source expected to last for the life of the fixture.

The new indoor/outdoor Destiny colorwash fixture utilizes 60 Luxeon 1-Watt red, green and blue emitters, each producing between 5 and 40 lumens of light. These LED lamps and the Luxeon 5-Watt, which generates a record-shattering 120 lumens of white light from a single emitter, are by far the highest power LEDs on the market.

As a result of Luxeon's high light output, the Destiny Colorwash Luminaire provides light performance equivalent to a mid-range halogen or low-range metal halide fixture, far outstripping similar solid-state products. TIR has designed new optics, power conversion and control technology to produce light distribution, color mixing and programmability comparable to conventional wall-washing systems.

TIR also has taken advantage of the tiny size of the LED light sources to create a fixture that is roughly the size of a notebook computer. This sleek profile, measuring 11" wide x 13" long x 2-1/2" deep, offers aesthetic and installation advantages for the architectural and retail display lighting markets.

"Until now, no solid-state colorwash fixture has been able to produce the light levels required by the design community," said Grant Harlow, Director of Marketing for TIR. "Lumileds' Luxeon technology is enabling us to meet the market demand for a colorwash alternative that combines high light output with lamp longevity, energy savings and the other benefits of solid-state lighting."

The red, green and blue LEDs of the Destiny Colorwash Luminaire can be mixed to create any color or white. Each fixture can operate on a standalone basis with a pre-programmed set of display choices such as alternating colors, while multiple fixtures can be connected to a standard DMX theatrical programming system for complete display flexibility.

The Destiny Colorwash Luminaire will ship in the fourth quarter of 2002. It joins the Destiny Illuminated Pole and Destiny ColorBar, winner of a platinum-level Award for Design Excellence from Design Journal, in the Destiny Series family of products. All Destiny products use Luxeon LEDs.
