Ivan Eliashevich, Program Director, GELcore and Dir of R&D, Emcore Electronic Materials & Devices

At an overview level, and from a unique perspective inside "the two worlds of GaN", we'll hear about common challenges and possibly converging solutions toward the biggest hurdles common to high-power LEDs and GaN electronics, including examination of:
-- Defect reduction and reliability related to defect densities
-- Heat extraction from the device location and then out to the ambient

3:45p GaN Electronics -- Powerful Promises for Commercial Applications
Kevin Linthicum, Vice President - GaN Materials & Co-Founder -- Nitronex
Warren Weeks -- Intrinsic Semiconductor
GaN-on-Silicon and GaN-on-Silicon Carbide approaches provide two key options for the "power" side of our market. What's the progress report? What are the next breakthroughs? When do the market need and technology maturity lines intersect?
4:25p GaN Electronics -- Powerful Promises for Defense Applications
Tom Kazior -- Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems
In last year's GaN Electronics Workshop, we learned that the capabilities and opportunities were certainly going to be there, but that the market was still 18 to 36 months away. Are we now 6 to 24 months from implementation? Key discussion topics include the maturation of GaN as an enabling technology for phased-array, RADAR and communications applications.

Nanotechnology Convergence in the Compounds -- What it Means for the Industry

  Tom Hausken -- Strategies Unlimited

Nanotechnology has become a buzzword for raising funds and publishing papers, but it is also the target of over $3 billion in government financed R&D worldwide in 2004. The R&D funding is very real, but the path to commercialization in compound semiconductors has been much less clear. This talk will discuss the technologies, the near-term and more speculative market opportunities, and some of the strategies that will be needed to succeed to commercialize nanotechnology products using compound semiconductors.

Pre-Conference Workshop
Monday, December 6 - 1:30p to 5:00p

Wide Bandgap Business Opportunities
Workshop Coordinator:   Keith Evans, Senior VP Business Development and CMO -- Crystal IS

Contributors:
Craig Farley, President and CEO -- Canyon Semiconductor
Laura Rea, Technology Development Leader, Sensor Materials Branch -- U.S. Air Force Research Lab

With various technical workshops on Compound Semiconductor (CS) Wide Bandgap (WBG) materials and devices behind us, as conducted in conjunction with previous CS Outlook conferences, we now look at which WBG related application sectors are already taking off (solid state lighting, cell phone backlighting), which continue to hold the future promise (optical storage, high power rf, extreme environment electronics, and ultraviolet applications), and which remain as R&D projects "waiting for their time". Commercially viable CS materials and devices all go through stages of exploration, evaluation, and eventual exploitation. This WBG Biz Opps Workshop will assess where the various WBG compounds (GaN, AlN, SiC, etc.) are in development, who's making them, who's backing them, who's buying them, and who and what are waiting in the wings. Coordinated by industry veteran Keith Evans and contributors Craig Farley and DoD veteran Laura Rea, this year's WBG Business Opportunities Workshop will objectively enlighten attendees on the myths versus realities that will help everyone be ready for the ramps... if and when they come.
