Welcome to Blue 2007 -- Why we are here, what we need to know
Tom Griffiths, President -- CompoundSemi Online/SolidStateLighting.net
Opening Keynote
It's About the System... Designing with the end in mind
8:30a
Brent York, CTO -- TIR Systems Ltd.
A collection of components does not make a system. Building it right takes intention and attention to a number of factors that component suppliers might not realize. It will take systems to succeed in the larger marketplace and that requires systems-level thinking, regardless of your position on the supply chain. Brent is one of the foremost experts in the industry on system integration and "systems thought process".
9:15a
Measuring the System... Metrology for SSL luminaires
Gerry Negley, CTO -- LED Lighting Fixtures
While testing needs to reflect the differences SSL offers, it also needs to avoid overstating the result. Getting real on results can keep us from becoming our own worst enemies by publishing unbelievable results that don't stand a minimum of scrutiny... but you have to build it as a system to get the result.

Battle of the Wavelengths: White excitation showdown... near UV versus blue
    Chuong Tran, President -- SemiLEDs
460nm blue is the traditional excitation source for phosphor-based white lighting. 400nm near-UV sources might be showing some advantages and we'll hear about some of the real results.
11:00a

Lateral vs. Vertical LED Die and the Impact on the System

Frank Shum, Director of Product Development -- Bridgelux, Inc.
Profile and orientation have more impact on the system than merely determing the height of the board. You'll hear from a design group that is pushing on innovative form factors to meet the latest market needs.
11:30a
Japan Market Needs and Market Report
Takaaki Maehara - Information & Communication Industries Consulting Div.
   -- Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.
Japan is major factor in race to broad adoption of LED and SSL technologies, and meeting the needs of LED users is key to penetrating it. In addition to this overview of the Japanese LED market and updates on recent activities there, you will hear what the what you need to know to meet the the market demands.

Supporting Components & Materials
1:15p
Advanced Drivers: The System Impact is Real
Ting-Ting Y. Lin, Senior Director, Business Development -- NXP Semiconductors
While the impact of a driver can be significant, many designers only consider the basic efficiency. It turns out that efficiency is only one factor of many to consider when it comes to the system approach that today's designer must employ.
1:45p
Phosphor for Power Devices: Truth in performance for phosphor technologies
Yi-Qun Li, General Manager, Phosphor Division -- Intematix
Lighting is predicated on stability. Hear about strategies and results for stabilizing
single phosphor mixes versus multi-phosphor mixes. Where is this technology going?
What happens with change in operating temperature? What about dimming, aging effects?
What appears to work and what should people be aware of in good designs?
2:15p
Silicone Lens Development for LEDs
T.Y. Lim -- NuSil Technology Asia
As silicone encapsulants have become more widely used in LED packaging, differences in Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of non-silicone lenses can present limitations during processing and operation. The ability for silicone to be heat and UV resistant compared to other moldable plastics, as well as contribute to higher brightness, silicone lenses are an excellent option to overcome some of these issues while increasing reliability and brightness.

3-D Packages for General Purpose Lighting: 3-D approaches for a 3-D world
Balu Jega, President -- Lednium Pty Ltd
The real world isn't flat so why should your package be? Understanding where the light needs to go will let your solution match the need. Some award-winning designs are making in-roads to key applications that many didn't feel were attainable for today's LED technologies.
3:30p

Power RGB: Designing for control in high density arrays

Siang P. Ong, Sr. Researcher/Regional Sales Manager -- Enfis Limited
RGBX colour mixing for white light and control in high power density arrays and integration into high output light engines – Including issues surrounding high CRI high output color-changeable light sources

Getting Real in 2007... We don't need the hype to be successful
Special Conference   Neal Hunter, Chairman and Co-Founder -- LED Lighting Fixtures
Founder, Former CEO and Chairman, Cree Inc.

        Keynote

Neal has seen this industry bloom from a handful of seeds, and it is a rare opportunity to hear his insights on what it will take for this industry to succeed, and where major mistakes can be made that could set back your company, and the industry. With real results that customers can believe in, there's no need to inflate the claims or fail in full disclosure. The industry has a winning hand, if it plays the game correctly.

Tuesday - April 17 - 1:30pm to 3:00pm

Pre-conference Manufacturing Workshop - US$49
... Silicone in the Machine ...
Using Silicones in LED Packaging and Manufacturing Processes
Workshop Instructors: NuSil Technologies

Simplicity in design, from the die to the lens, silicone has become a standard material in the packaging of LEDs due to its great optical properties and ability to handle extreme temperatures. Silicone's chemistry can be adapted to function as optically clear encapsulants, thermally conductive adhesives, and even primers. By understanding fundamentals of silicone properties and cure chemistry, those working with silicone can better understand processing parameters to increase yields and decrease down time. The course will also discuss how to consider material compatibilities with the variety of silicones available that can increase brightness, reliability and can handle the heat.
Who should attend: Designers and Engineers currently using, or considering use of, silicone encapulants, lenses, or adhesives, in LED packages and desire a better understanding of material capabilities and how to improve yields and product performance.
