Acken Optoelectronics First to Get New Veeco GENxcel™ MBE System

Veeco Instruments Inc. of Plainview, New York USA, reported that Acken Optoelectronics will receive the first shipment of Veeco’s new GENxcel™ Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) System. Veeco says that the GENxcel system expands on the design of its GENxplor by offering a more economical, fully integrated deposition system that can produce high-quality epitaxial layers on substrates up to 4” in diameter.

Acken Optoelectronics to Employ GENxcel MBE System for 5G Mobile Communication Market

Chinese start-up Acken Optoelectronics Ltd. specializes in developing of high-speed communication devices including RF-switching, advanced optoelectronic communication, and low noise amplifiers for mobile applications. Dr. Yiqiao Chen is leading the research at Acken Optoelectronics to capture the 5G mobile communication market. Dr. Chen previously utilized Veeco’s technology solutions at Columbia University where he performed research and development using a Veeco GENII MBE system.

“Veeco’s high quality and high-performance MBE systems combined with their local support are unparalleled in the Chinese market,” said Dr Chen. “We are very excited to receive the first GENxcel system and are confident Veeco’s systems and source technology will best enable us to advance our compound semiconductor development.”

GENxcel Expands on GENxplor System

According to Veeco, the newly introduced GENxcel system expands on the GENxplor™, the best-selling MBE system since its introduction in August 2013. Unlike the GENxplor™ which has 3” epitaxial growth capabilities, the GENxcel offers high-quality epitaxial growth on single 4” substrates. Furthermore, the GENxcel system features a fully integrated into a single frame design for maximum laboratory footprint efficiency as well as 12 source ports and modern electronics. Also, Veeco says that the GENxcel system has an easy-to-use manual transfer system.

“Many customers were asking Veeco for a modern, manual transfer, four-inch wafer, MBE system. The obvious choice was to leverage the market validated design principles of the GENxplor into a larger system,” said Gerry Blumenstock, vice president and general manager, Veeco’s MBE Business Unit. “The GENxcel is the ideal system to fulfill this market need for both R&D and pilot-production.”
