Accent Optical Technologies, a leading supplier of optoelectronics and silicon semiconductor process control systems, today announced the acquisition of Philips Analytical’s Waterloo operations. The Waterloo operation manufactures two key product lines, a DCD x-ray diffraction tool and a photoluminescence mapping system, primarily targeted for compound semiconductor process control. The definitive agreement for the acquisition, which included intellectual property, know-how and 53 employees worldwide, was finalized July 16th. The purchase price was not disclosed.
“This acquisition puts Accent in an even stronger position to provide a full suite of tools for our customers,” said Bruce C. Rhine, Chairman and CEO of Accent Optical Technologies. “We expect this acquisition to be accretive in 2003 and anticipate significant growth in the coming years in the process control market serving the optoelectronics and wireless industries. This is our third acquisition in 14 months as we continue to add products to our global, direct channel of distribution.”
The three products, DCD Pro and PLM-100/150, will further expand Accent’s product line. The DCD Pro accurately measures thickness and composition of epitaxial layers only a few atoms thick and brings ultra-fast semiconductor wafer mapping to the process line. It uses x-ray diffraction – one of the most powerful techniques for characterizing epitaxially-grown semiconductor films – to greatly improve process development and high-volume production control. The DCD Pro is the leading instrument for characterizing SiGe (crucial technology for high-speed wireless communications), along with the thin epitaxial films used in III/Vs, II/VIs and HEMTs.
The PLM-100 is a photoluminescence mapping tool for compound-semiconductor manufacturers and the PLM-150 is a third-generation solution for manufacturers requiring high-throughput yield-management.
“This technology is a great fit for Accent’s product line. Already a leader in providing process control solutions to this market, these additional products make our product line more complete for our customers,” stated Dr. Steve Blight, VP and General Manager, Optoelectronics Division, Accent Optical Technologies. “This acquisition brings together two groups that have consistently introduced innovative tools for semiconductor characterization. Coupled with its world-wide sales and customer service network and proven commitment to ongoing product development, Accent is now in a position to provide its customers with a more complete range of best-in-class solutions than ever before.”
