Skyworks Solutions, Inc. of Irvine, California USA, revealed the latest products from its 5G enabling platform Sky5™. Skyworks designed the company’s extraordinarily compact wideband 16-state antenna aperture tuners to improve efficiency and enhance bandwidth coverage from 600 MHz to 6 GHz for LTE Advanced Pro to emerging 5G standards, across a wide range of mobile devices. Notably, antenna tuning plays a crucial role in maintaining smartphone power efficiency and battery life, especially as signal processing complexity continues increases with the adoption of 5G.

With smartphone makers adding new features including 4×4 multiple-in, multiple-out (MIMO) and 5G new radio (NR) for 2019 applications, next-generation architectures must integrate significantly more antennas. For example, new bezel-less smartphones embed anywhere from four to as many as seven antennas compared to the two to four with current platforms.

At the same time, expanded functionality and the migration to full-screen infinity displays limit the available board space. Skyworks contends that the proprietary design and process techniques of its antenna tuning solutions help antenna performance to meet stringent linearity requirements and size constraints.

New Sky5 Antenna Solutions

The SKY5™−9256-701LF advanced aperture tuner boasts reliable linear operation and extremely low Ron (1.1ohm) and Coff (145fF), letting system designers recover the 1.5 to 3 dB gain degradation resulting from shrinking antenna sizes.

Skyworks says that the MIPI®-controlled, 16-state capability of the tuner also lets engineers combine arms for even smaller Ron and Coff. And, according to the company, the device provides superior harmonics throughout the operating range, helping customers achieve RSE requirements and pass certification.
